Nanaimo, BC – Ethan Scardina scored the overtime winner, giving the Nanaimo Clippers (34-17-4) a 2-1 victory over the Powell River Kings (27-22-6) on Saturday night at the Frank Crane Arena.
Kyler Kovich fed Scardina a pass in front, and he tapped it into the open net for his fifth goal against the Kings and 19th of the season. With the overtime winner, the Clippers improve to 4-2 in overtimes this season, while the Kings fall to 1-6 in the extra-frame.
The Kings let a 1-0 lead slip away early in the third period. Brandon Dent’s first goal in 12 games and 13th of the season tied the game 1-1 after a Scardina’s shot hit Derek Krall, and deflected off Dent’s leg and into the net.
The Kings originally took a 1-0 lead 1:28 into the second period. Devin Leduc snapped a shot from the slot past Jordan Naylor with the assists to Jacob Badal and Ben Wozney. Leduc extended his goal-streak to two games, while Badal extended his point-streak to three games, with five assists during that time.
Kings netminder Derek Krall allowed two goals on 33-shots, while Clippers goaltender Jordan Naylor made 29-saves on 30-shots for his 27th win of the season.
The Clippers extend their winning-streak to two games and improve to 6-1 over their last seven games. The Kings drop their second straight game (both in overtime), and move to 1-1-3 over their last five games.
The Powell River Kings are back in action today at 1:00 p.m., against the Victoria Grizzlies at the Q Centre. This will be the first of three straight games against the Grizzlies to finish off the regular season.
